The National Maternity Hospital, Dublin

The National Maternity Hospital occupies one of Dublin’s most historic healthcare campuses, where space is at a premium and every intervention must be carefully considered within an established clinical environment. Following a competitive public tender process, Head-Wind was appointed to deliver a dedicated staff cycle facility that would encourage sustainable commuting while respecting the operational demands of one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals.

The central challenge was to maximise cycle capacity within an awkward, tightly constrained footprint in a difficult-to-access inner-city location, while maintaining a safe, intuitive layout for everyday staff use. Head-Wind developed a bespoke enclosure that makes full use of every available square metre, combining gas-assisted two-tier cycle parking and semi-vertical racks for up to 60 bicycles.

The structure features a powder-coated steel framework, a sedum green roof, and a combination of high-security mesh and steel panelling to balance security, privacy and architectural appearance. An integrated electronic card access control system provides secure staff-only entry. The project scope also included the demolition of the existing facility, associated groundworks and the complete design, manufacture and installation of the new enclosure.

Careful logistical planning and close coordination with the hospital team were essential to safely deliver the works within a live healthcare campus.
