Why Invest in a Custom Changing Room Locker?

Changing room lockers are a part of the end-of-trip package that planning policy and BREEAM now expect. But while you can easily meet those obligations by picking up a standard, off-the-shelf design, ensuring your chosen locker functions effectively for users and blends into your entire design isn’t as easy to guarantee.

Off-the-shelf designs don’t consider the footprint you have to work with; neither are they value engineered to give you the most value for your budget. Also, a standard design won’t be uniquely designed to suit the exact needs of your expected users.

If maximum functionality and aesthetic harmony matter to you as much as ticking off planning policy obligations, a custom changing room locker is the best way to achieve all three without making any compromises.

Head-Wind is a bespoke cycling infrastructure manufacturer and installer, and we build every one of our changing room lockers to measure. We size the lockers to fit the space you’ve got and match the colour to the rest of your finish. We also draw them up alongside cycle storage designs like cycle shelters and two-tier racks, if your site requires them, so all your cycling facilities blend together with the overall development.

Made to measure for the space you’ve got

We size every changing room locker to fit your available footprint and likely use cases without wasting an inch. It doesn’t matter if you are working with a corner, a basement or a proper changing room; we will create a value-engineered solution for the space you have. And we will also match your locker designs to the RAL colour shades, finishes, and graphics of your entire development so they fit the aesthetic goal.

Materials that handle wet kit and hard or outdoor use

Our changing room lockers can function for 25+ years, even when used heavily daily, placed outdoors or installed right next to showers. Depending on where your locker will be placed, our production process uses options like galvanised steel with a powder-coated finish (to prevent rust), solid-grade laminate/phenolic (to prevent swelling and peeling), and structured venting gaps around the locker edges (to keep air moving and allow kit that’s soaked on the way in to dry out). Each design also comes with a 10-year aftercare warranty for additional peace of mind.

Locking that matches how the building runs

Choose from a range of secure locking options based on how your changing room lockers will be used. Head-Wind’s bespoke locker designs are compatible with simple mechanical locks (for individual use) or electronic keypads, swipe cards or phone-operated lockers (for multiple people).

And if you need fully enclosed storage for the bikes themselves, you can explore our bike lockers and stands range.

Specified, drawn and installed by one team

Head Wind won’t design and ship your custom locker, then leave you to find an installer. Instead, we handle the entire process end to end. You’ll get proper technical drawings up front to review and sign off. Then, we’ll manufacture your locker, do the site prep, deliver your unit, and install it. All within 6 to 8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

They’re secure lockers for the end of a cycle commute or a shift. People keep helmets, wet gear, shoes and a change of clothes in them while they shower and change or work. On commercial schemes, they sit alongside showers, cycle parking and drying space as part of the end-of-trip facilities.

For rooms right next to the showers, go with a moisture-resistant board like solid-grade laminate (phenolic). It handles humidity and won’t warp, so it lasts far longer than doors with a timber core in a damp room. If you choose Head-Wind as your locker manufacturer and installer, we’ll match the material to where the lockers will be installed.

Under BREEAM’s cyclist-facilities credit, you need one locker for every cycle space, and each locker has to hold a helmet, a towel and a full change of clothes. The number of cycle spaces is usually worked out at around one per ten people in the building, and your locker count follows from that. Message Head-Wind with your project specifications and we will size the run to whatever your assessor is aiming for.

Two main types. Mechanical locks (a padlock, a coin-return lock, or a plain key) suit lockers that belong to one person. Electronic locks (a keypad code, a swipe card, or a phone app) suit shared lockers. If you are not sure which ones best fit your users, get in touch with our team, and we’ll assess and fit whichever suits how you run the building.

Because Head-Wind makes and fits our designs ourselves, a typical locker job takes us 6 to 8 weeks from the day you sign off. But most other manufacturers take about 10 to 12 weeks.

Yes. You’ll get technical drawings up front to review and sign off. Your architect, quantity surveyor and planners can check everything against the approved scheme before we make a thing. If the spec you’ve got is incomplete, we’ll help you lay it out. And if it’s over budget, we’ll work out a cheaper version that still meets the requirements. Send us your planning drawings, and we’ll put together a custom design and a quote.
